A US Federal Commission on International Religious Freedom has called the Citizenship Amendment Bill a “dangerous turn in the wrong direction”. The Commission has also demanded US sanctions against Home Minister Amit Shah.
Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 in the Lok Sabha. The bill aims to grant citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who have been tortured there on the basis of religion. The bill was passed by a majority of 311-80 in the Lok Sabha on Monday midnight and will now be introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
